Local Services Ads for criminal defense lawyers

Local Services Ads for Lawyers: A Criminal Defense Guide From a 5.5× Account

For many criminal defense firms, Google Local Services Ads are the most efficient paid channel they’ll ever run. They sit above the regular ads, show your reviews and a Google Screened badge, and charge per lead instead of per click. They also come with their own ways to waste money: categories that bring the wrong cases, leads you pay for but shouldn’t, and budgets that run dry by noon.

This guide covers how LSA works for criminal defense, what it returned for a real firm, and the four habits that kept its cost per case low.

Over the same stretch, the firm’s regular Google search ads returned 3.4×. Both channels worked. LSA was the more efficient one, and the firm’s good months on both followed the same pattern: they were the months that signed two to four high-value cases.

What are Local Services Ads for lawyers?

Local Services Ads (LSA) are the ads with the Google Screened badge that appear at the very top of the page for searches like “criminal defense lawyer near me” or “DUI attorney.” They sit above the regular search ads and the map listings, and each one shows the firm’s name, review rating, years in business and hours.

Three things make them different from regular Google Ads:

  • You pay per lead, not per click. A lead is a call or message that comes through the ad. Browsing your profile is free.
  • You don’t choose keywords. You choose job types (for example DUI, drug crimes or domestic violence) and a service area, and Google decides when to show you.
  • You have to pass Google’s screening. For law firms that means license verification and background checks before the ads can run.

How to get Google Screened as a law firm

Google Screened is the verification that lets a law firm run Local Services Ads. Requirements vary by state, but expect the following:

  1. Create a Local Services Ads account and choose your practice area (criminal law) and job types.
  2. Add every attorney who will take leads, with their bar license details, so Google can verify them.
  3. Complete the background checks Google requires for the firm and its attorneys.
  4. Connect your Google Business Profile, so your reviews carry over into the ad.
  5. Set your hours, service area and weekly budget, then wait for approval, which can take anywhere from days to several weeks.

Start early. A firm that applies the week it wants leads is usually disappointed.

How Local Services Ads work for lawyers

  • You pay per lead, not per click. A lead is a call or message from a potential client through your listing.
  • You choose case categories, not keywords. For defense firms that usually means criminal law and DUI, plus specific matter types inside them.
  • Ranking depends on more than budget. Reviews, responsiveness, proximity and how often you answer all affect where you show.
  • You can dispute leads. Google credits leads that don’t meet its criteria, such as spam, wrong service or a caller outside your area.
  • You must be verified. Google checks your law license and runs background checks before your listing goes live.

Requirements and dispute rules change, so check Google’s own Local Services help pages before you set up.

How Google ranks Local Services Ads

Because there are no keywords, you can’t simply outbid everyone. Google says it ranks law firms in Local Services Ads using signals including:

  • Proximity to the person searching.
  • Review score and number of reviews on your Google profile.
  • Responsiveness: how quickly and how often you answer calls and messages from the ad.
  • Business hours: you can only show while you are marked open.
  • Serious complaints about the firm.
  • Budget and bid, which help but don’t override the rest.

For criminal defense, responsiveness and hours matter more than in most practice areas. People search right after an arrest, often at night. A firm that is marked open and answers at 11 p.m. on a Saturday competes for leads a 9-to-5 firm never sees. In the Amari account, holding the top position (#1 about two thirds of the time, top of page 98%) came from steady reviews, fast answers and budget pacing, not from the highest bid.

How much do Local Services Ads cost for lawyers?

You pay a price per lead that depends on your market and the job type, and you control spending with a weekly budget. You can let Google set the price per lead to get as many leads as possible, or set a maximum you are willing to pay.

Two numbers from the Amari Law Firm account show what that looks like in practice:

Local Services Ads, Jan – Aug 2026
Ad spend$61,094
Signed-case fees$336,950
Return on ad spend5.5×
Credits recovered from disputesAbout $850 – $1,300 a month
Amari Law Firm, Birmingham, AL. Fees from the firm’s case management system.

The disputes line matters. You can ask Google to credit leads that were spam, wrong practice area or outside your service area. In June, disputed leads were about 15% of everything the firm was charged for. A firm that never disputes pays for all of them. Which criminal defense job types to turn on

Local Services Ads let you choose the kinds of cases you want. Turn on the matters you actually take and that pay well, and turn off the rest. In the Birmingham account, minor traffic tickets were removed because they produced leads that cost almost as much as a DUI and paid a fraction of the fee.

  • Usually keep: DUI/DWI, drug crimes, assault and violent crimes, domestic violence, theft, federal and white-collar matters you handle.
  • Usually review: juvenile, probation violations and expungement, depending on your fees.
  • Usually turn off: minor traffic tickets and anything you refer out.

Four habits that kept the cost per case low

1. Dispute bad leads every month

A monthly review of every charged lead recovered roughly $850 to $1,300 a month in credits. In June, about 15% of charged leads qualified for a dispute. Most firms never dispute, so they pay for wrong numbers, spam and people looking for other kinds of lawyers. Put it on the calendar and treat it like reconciling a bank statement.

2. Turn off categories that don’t pay

Minor traffic tickets brought in plenty of leads at fees too low to justify the cost. Turning them off moved the budget toward higher-fee criminal matters. Look at what each category actually signs, not how many leads it sends.

3. Hold the top of the page

The listing held a top-of-page position 98% of the time and the number one position about two-thirds of the time. Reviews and answer rate do a lot of that work. If calls go to voicemail, Google notices and your listing slips.

4. Pace the budget through the day

Quiet stretches after high-volume days pointed to budget pacing: the listing spent its budget early and disappeared. Arrests happen at night and on weekends. If your budget is gone by Friday afternoon, you miss the calls that matter most.

Most defense firms should run both. LSA catches the person who wants to call a reviewed, verified lawyer right now. Search ads let you target specific charges, like a federal drug charge or a second DUI, with a page built for that charge. Read the full guide to Google Ads for criminal defense attorneys.

Setting up LSA for a criminal defense firm

  1. Pick categories carefully. Include the charges you want more of and leave out the ones you don’t take.
  2. Set a service area you can actually serve. Courts you appear in and the areas your clients live in, not the whole state.
  3. Get reviews before you spend. Ask recent clients for reviews. A listing with few reviews struggles to win the top spot.
  4. Answer every call. Use a live answering service after hours. Missed calls hurt both your ranking and your signed cases.
  5. Track leads to signed cases. Log each LSA lead in your case management system with its source, so you can see which categories pay.
  6. Review and dispute monthly. Then adjust categories and budget based on what signed.

Common LSA mistakes defense firms make

  • Judging LSA by cost per lead instead of signed fees per lead.
  • Leaving low-fee categories on because they generate volume.
  • Never disputing leads, and paying full price for spam and wrong numbers.
  • Letting the budget run out by midday, then missing evening and weekend arrests.
  • Not tracking which LSA leads became clients, so nobody knows the real return.

Are Google Local Services Ads worth it for lawyers?

For criminal defense they can be the most efficient paid channel. In one Birmingham firm’s account, $61,094 in Local Services Ads produced $336,950 in signed fees over eight months, a 5.5× return, compared with 3.4× for regular search ads.

How much do Local Services Ads cost for lawyers?

You pay per lead, at a price that depends on your market and the type of case, and you set a weekly budget. You can dispute invalid leads for credit; in one defense firm’s account, disputes recovered about $850 to $1,300 a month.

How do I get Google Screened as a lawyer?

Create a Local Services Ads account, choose your practice area and job types, add each attorney’s license details for verification, complete Google’s background checks, connect your Google Business Profile and set your hours, service area and budget.

Is Google LSA better than Google Ads for criminal defense?

They do different jobs. LSA wins on cost per signed case for local, urgent searches. Google Ads gives you control over keywords, charges and landing pages, and reaches searches LSA doesn’t show for. Most defense firms do best running both, with LSA first if the budget is small.

How does Google rank Local Services Ads for lawyers?

Google uses proximity to the searcher, review score and count, how quickly you respond to leads, your business hours, serious complaints and your budget. For criminal defense, answering calls quickly, including nights and weekends, makes a large difference.

Can I choose keywords for Local Services Ads?

No. You choose job types and a service area, and Google decides which searches to show you for. Turning off low-value job types is how you control quality.

Is Google LSA going away?

There is no sign of that. Local Services Ads are still running for legal services in 2026, though Google regularly changes how they look and where they appear, so check your dashboard and lead quality monthly.
