Yes, generally speaking, Google Ads works for small businesses. However, its effectiveness depends on how your business approaches it. To determine if it will work for you, research the average cost in your industry, including the click-through rate (CTR) and cost per conversion. With the right setup and management, Google Ads, Local Services Ads (LSA), or social media advertising can work for any business.
Is Google Ads losing its edge in the AI era?
I don’t believe so. While it’s true that Google is losing some search volume to rising platforms like TikTok and ChatGPT, I see that as a healthy shift. It’s good for users. That said, people don’t change habits overnight, and many won’t change at all.
Despite the shift, I believe Google still has the edge. They’re evolving and keeping up with emerging tech.
On Reddit, opinions are mixed. Some say Google dropped the ball on AI, that their tools feel underdeveloped, with missed opportunities like automated split testing or smarter ad generation from landing pages. They suspect internal issues, like talent loss or underestimating the AI wave.
On the flip side, others argue the opposite: since the ChatGPT boom, Google has gone into overdrive. They’ve been rolling out updates constantly, from Gemini 2.5 Pro (which currently ranks #1 among LLMs), to the new =AI function in Sheets that drastically boosts productivity.
And when you consider their assets:infrastructure, data, talent, cash, brand trust, and reach (Search, YouTube, Android, Chrome, Gmail), it’s hard to imagine a future where Google isn’t a major AI player, if not the leader.
Meanwhile, TikTok is gaining ad traction for different reasons. Its algorithm is laser-focused on user behavior, which forces advertisers to make engaging content. Even AI-generated creatives perform well, as long as they look good and hook the viewer.
Google Ads, in contrast, feels like it favors whoever spends more, regardless of engagement. That’s a huge pain point. The algorithm doesn’t always seem to care whether users actually want the ads they see.
So… Is Google Ads losing its edge in the AI era?
Short answer:
Not yet. But pressure is mounting
In my experience running lead generation campaigns, both platforms have value, but they serve different purposes.
🔵 Meta (Facebook/Instagram)
Strength: Brand awareness, storytelling, interest-based targeting.
Audience: Great for reaching people by age, gender, interests, relationship status, and location.
Challenge: It’s more of a proactive platform, you’re interrupting someone’s scroll to make them interested in your offer.
Result: Can absolutely drive leads and sales, but it requires testing creatives and audiences. Less predictable than Google.
💡 “Meta is proactive – you’re hoping to catch someone who’s ready, or will be soon.”
🔴 Google Ads
Strength: Capturing intent. You’re showing up when someone is actively searching for a solution.
Audience: You target keywords and locations, not interests.
Advantage: Predictable results when targeting bottom-of-funnel actions like phone calls, form fills, or purchases.
Limitation: Less visually creative, and often more expensive per click — but those clicks are usually hotter.
💡 “Google is reactive — you’re showing up to help someone already looking for you.”
🧪 My Real-World Results
All the tests I’ve run so far have focused on lead generation, not e-commerce, and in that space:
Google consistently drives more qualified, ready-to-convert traffic.
Meta performs best for brand lift, engagement, and retargeting.
📣 What Redditors Say:
“Google is great for search intent: I paid $6K for a photographer I found via Google. I don’t use social media.”
“Meta’s audience isn’t as universal as we think. A lot of people, especially in their 30s+, don’t even have Instagram or Facebook.”
“You’ll miss a chunk of your market if you only use Meta. Same goes for only using Google.”
“Leads from Google are hotter. Meta makes you work harder with your creatives.”
✅ Final Opinion: It’s Not Either/Or — It’s Both
The smartest businesses don’t treat Google Ads and Meta like rivals.
They combine them to:
Capture interest (Meta)
Convert demand (Google)
